Two major road projects affecting portions of Maple Grove will soon begin construction.
Starting this July, the pavement rehabilitation project for Interstate 494, which will include segments of road from Interstate 694 (Fish Lake Interchange) to Interstate 394.
The other project set to begin will be the completion of Highway 610 from Elm Creek Boulevard to Interstate 94 in Maple Grove.
The I-494 rehabilitation project will include repaving 7 miles of the road between I-694 and I-394. The project also includes reconstructing several bridges, building noise barriers and adding a third lane in each direction between Hwy. 55 and East Fish Lake Road. Previously, the project would have included a dynamic shoulder instead of a third lane, but there is currently a bill in the Minnesota Legislature to try and get funding to cover costs for additional lanes.
Bobbie Dahlke, Public Affairs Metro District with MnDOT, said they are “currently exploring and identifying funding options for additional third lanes of the project.”
She added, “Either way construction will start this July, third lane or dynamic shoulder.”
The timetable for the project will be from July to November will include night and weekend lane closures. Lane restrictions are not expected this year and during the winter months of 2015.
“We are preparing for major work to start next spring,” Dahlke said.
The second phase will be from next spring to November of next year. Construction will begin on the southbound side of I-494. There will also be temporary closures of ramps along I-494 in the entire project area. Traffic will also be narrowed down to two or one lane of traffic temporarily during this phase.
The final phase will be from the spring 2016 to November 2016. Traffic will be shifted to accommodate construction during this phase as well.
During the project maintenance repairs on bridges ramps will be done to the following areas:
• Bridges to and from I-94 and I-694
• East Fish Lake Road and Bass Lake Road
• County Road 47
• Canadian Pacific Railway
• Schmidt Lake Road
• Rockford Road
• Highway 55
• County Road 6
• Carlson Parkway
• Cheshire Lane
The cost of the project is estimated to be $68.3 million currently.
According to the city of Maple Grove, “Highway 610 is a vital east-west link for the expanding northern suburbs.”
The construction of the final 2.5-mile segment of roadway received funding last fall. The project has been developed through a partnership with MnDOT, Hennepin County and Maple Grove.
The cost of the project is about $100 million, which will be funded through the Corridor of Commerce. The Corridor of Commerce was created by the 2013 Minnesota Legislature authorize the sale of up to $300 million in new bonds for the construction, reconstruction and improvement of trunk highways.
The future extension of the road will include realigning and extended the road from Elm Creek Boulevard to I-94. There will be a bridge over Fernbrook Lane and an interchange at Hwy. 610 and Maple Grove Parkway.
A half-mile segment of 101st Avenue N. between I-94 and Fernbrook Lane will be closed and removed. Also part of the project, the extension of 105th Avenue west from Holly Lane across I-94 to a new intersection with 101st Avenue.
Minor construction is set to begin late this year. It is anticipated that road will be open to traffic in 2017.
