Osseo Schools seek MN Math Corps or Reading Corps tutors

Nearly one in three Minnesota third-graders can’t read this sentence, and nearly 40 percent of eighth graders are not proficient in math? The purpose of MN Math and Reading Corps is to improve that trend. Osseo Area Schools is currently seeking 22 full-time and 10 part-time MN Math and Reading Corps tutors for the 2014-15 school year.

Tutors work with children from age three to third grade to provide proven research-based instruction and tools to guide struggling students toward improvement. Tutors work one-on-one or in small groups to help students advance their skills. Research shows 80 percent of Reading Corps students passed the standard reading assessment while 74 percent of Math Corp students exceeded their growth targets.

Students aren’t the only ones who gain skills. Tutors will:

• Build career skills and network

• Earn a $484 biweekly living stipend (full-time tutors)

• Receive up to $5,645 to further their own education

• Receive training to guide struggling students toward proficiency in math or reading

• Give young readers and math students the chance to build a brighter future
