March match month at CROSS services

During the Month of March, all food and funds donated to CROSS will receive a percentage match from Minnesota FoodShare and throughout March and April from the Feinstein Foundation.

Since 1983, Minnesota FoodShare has coordinated the largest fund and food drive in the state.

They organize a statewide media campaign to promote food shelf donations. In March of each year they match funds and food to the 300 food shelves they partnered with. Throughout the year, Minnesota FoodShare advocates on behalf of hungry families with state and federal lawmakers and educates the public about hunger in Minnesota.

In 2013 thanks to community donations, CROSS received an additional $7,900 in matching funds from Minnesota FoodShare.

The Feinstein Foundation was created by Alan Shawn Feinstein of Cranston, R.I. Feinstein has for the past 15 years given away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country.

CROSS will participate in this match opportunity again from March 1 to April 30. In 2013, CROSS community donations resulted in an additional $700 for CROSS from the Feinstein Foundation.

To raise community donations during these two matching fund opportunitites, on March 13 CROSS will participate in a community fundraising project. Maple Grove Empty Bowls, to be held at the Maple Grove Community Center.

Empty Bowls is an international grass roots effort to raise funds for local food shelves. The simple intent behind this project is to gather potters and others from the community to create handcrafted bowls educate about hunger in our community.  Local potters and artists, as well as the Osseo School District Community Education, and Maple Grove Arts Center donate handcrafted bowls.

On Thursday, March 13, from 2 to 8 p.m., the community is invited to shop and purchase these handcrafted bowls, while enjoying a simple meal of soup and bread donated from local restaurants. It is open to the public, no tickets necessary as donations to CROSS are accepted at the door.

Guests keep the bowl as a reminder of those experiencing hunger having empty bowls in the community and throughout Minnesota.

CROSS Services provides food, clothing, seasonal children’s programs, limited financial assistance, and Meals on Wheels to families living in the communities of Corcoran, Dayton, Maple Grove, Osseo, Rogers and west Champlin.
