Area seniors from Maple Grove and Osseo Senior High Schools were named finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) — a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year — and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.
Maple Grove Senior High seniors Emily Leonard and Malavika Suresh were named finalists. Emily will be pursuing a career in medical engineering at North Dakota State University next fall. Malavika would like to pursue a career in biomedical engineering and is waiting to hear back from her schools.
Osseo Senior High School senior Emma Folke was also named a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
Back in September these students were among about 16,00 students who were notified they qualified as semifinalists. In February the students advanced to the finalist standing.
From March or June, National Merit Scholarship Program will announce that approximately 8,000 finalists have been selected to receive National Merit Scholarships.
