Three area gymnasts may not have won any medals at the state meet Saturday, but they earned respect of their coaches.
Senior Amelia Sutherland and junior Alexus Aquirre competed for Delano on balance beam along with senior Mikayla Erickson from Rockford who placed 18th. Sutherland was 21st and Aguirre 32nd.
Sutherland also represented Section 5A on vault, floor exercise and in the all-around competition, placing 25th. She was 11th on vault and 17th on floor.
“I am so proud of the girls for their hard work and efforts to make it to the state meet,” said Delano coach Jamie Greenberg. “Alexus added some difficulty to her routine and had a few errors.”
Rockford coach Jessica Johnson said Erickson had a wonderful state meet experience, going into the meet with a level head and confident in her routine.
“Mikayla went through her entire routine almost flawlessly,” adds Johnson. “When she landed her dismount I couldn’t have been prouder. She has been one of the hardest workers in the gym since I started coaching her in seventh grade. Mikayla has oozed leadership qualities, which explains why she has been a captain of the team since her ninth-grade year.”
Erickson is heading next to Arizona State University where she will be attending the honors college and plans to become a pediatrician. Mikayla’s father Mike served as a Rocket coach the past two seasons.
