Maple Grove receives the third seed in the Section 5 boys’ basketball tournament and will host No. 5 Centennial Thursday, Feb. 27.
The winner advances to play No. 2 Osseo or No. 7 Wayzata Tuesday, March 4, at Rogers. The section final is Friday, March 7, at Rogers.
Northwest Suburban Conference champion Champlin Park is the No. 1 seed.
Crimson coach Nick Schroeder wants his young team to improve through the season and peak around section and he is pleased with then improvement.
“Overall I am happy with the progress the team has made,” Schroeder said. “With a young team you want to see them grow as players and good people over a season and I have seen that. We are not where we want to be yet but we are getting better every day and that is the goal.”
The Crimson, 18-8 overall, are on a hot streak as they have gone 6-2 in their final eight regular season games. The only losses were to top teams Hopkins and Armstrong. They also had a big win at Osseo.
Maple Grove freshman point guard Brad Davison feels his team is peaking at the right time.
“We had some tough losses earlier in the season to some really good teams,” said Davison, who leads the team in scoring and assists. “But we are starting to click now and hopefully we can keep getting better. The win over Osseo gives us a lot of confidence. We feel we can play with the better teams.”
