The Delano/Rockford/Buffalo girls hockey team got as close to playing at the state tournament as every before, but Roseau will be making the trip to St. Paul after a 3-0 victory in the Section 8AA championship game.

The Bison defeated Sartell/Sauk Rapids 3-2 in the semifinals, advancing to face top seed Roseau last Thursday in Bemidji. It was the first time playing in the section and first time the program played in a section final.

The game was closer than it sounds, with an empty net goal pushing the game out of reach. The first period was scoreless with Roseau having a slight edge in shots at 7-5.

In the middle of the second period Lindsay Roethke’s shot hit the pipe and deflected straight out. Roseau scored the first goal in the second period when a shot trickled past goalie Kendra Carlson.

Roseau scored seven seconds into the third period. Coach Ray Dahlof said the goal put a dagger in the Bison comeback effort. The Bison had two power play opportunities, but each time the team was also whistled for a penalty.

“In a scary moment with just over a minute left, Lindsay Roethke appeared to be hit from behind and crashed full speed into the boards, hitting her head and both knees,” said Dahlof. “She was motionless on the ice for over five minutes, but was able to skate off with help. She was diagnosed with a concussion.”

Dahlof called it an exciting section championship game when both teams played well. He adds, “It stings to lose a section final, but we had a great season. It will take some time to get over this loss, however.”

Against Sartell/Sauk Rapids goals were netted by Kirsten Olson, Abby Halluska and Madi Jewell.

SSR scored on a five on three power play goal to close to 3-2 with about five minutes to play and a minute and a half left on the power play. The penalty was killed and the game won.
