Four Osseo cross country skiers qualified for next week’s state meet with their fine performances at the Section 5 meet at Wirth Park Wednesday, Feb. 6.
The boys’ team was in a three-team battle for the section title with Andover and Mounds View. Osseo was in third after the classic race but couldn’t close the gap in the freestyle race and finished third, four points out of second.
“The boys could have skied conservative for second place, but they went after first and maybe went out a little too hard. We are proud of them going for the win,” said Osseo coach Brad Rosch.
Leading the way were Osseo’s three state qualifiers. Osseo’s top finisher was Tanner Wetzel, taking eighth in pursuit, seventh in classic and ninth in freestyle. Adam Berkowitz was right behind taking ninth in pursuit, fifth in classic, 15th in freestyle. Mitchell Dehmer completed Osseo State skiers by skiing two equal races ,11th in both classic and freestyle, with 11th in pursuit. Osseo team score was completed with Jason Schulte’s 20th pursuit finish, 28th in classic and a great 14th in freestyle. Senior David Jedynak 23rd pursuit, and Juniors Luc Robichaud 43rd pursuit, Carter Eich 44th pursuit completed the team.
The girls’ team took sixth place. Osseo was led by Sarah Bezdicek’s third-place pursuit finish. Bezdicek was solid in both races taking fourth in classic and third in freestyle. This is her third time qualifying for state.
“Making state three years in a row is a great accomplishment. We are looking forward to her races at state,” said Rosch
Senior Jenny Schoenrock had her best races finishing 31st in pursuit, 30th classic, 33rd freestyle. Kaitlyn Anderson was close behind placing 33rd in pursuit, 33rd classic, 32nd freestyle. Laura Soderstrom (46th pursuit, 42nd classic, 51st freestyle) completed the team score. Mariah Wetzel 51st pursuit, Sidney Polich 58th pursuit and Sammy Strootman 61st pursuit completed the section team.
“The girls’ team had a good day. For four of the girls it was their first section meet and they performed well,” said Osseo coach Kay Pederson.
Next up for the Orioles is Charlie Banks Relay Wednesday Feb. 12 followed by the Minnesota State meet Thursday, Feb. 13 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.
