In the first-ever Mississippi-8 individual conference tourney, the STMA wrestling team had 8 out 14 wrestlers earn “All-Conference” status by placing in the “top 3” of the 10-team Mississippi-8 Conference Tourney. The Knights crowned 5 individual champions in the tourney held Friday evening January 31st at Monticello High School.

Earning individual titles for the Knights were: Aaron Dick (106 pounds), Mitchell McKee (120), Tommy Thorn (126), Mark Voss (145), and Jacob Briggs (195). Mitchell Mckee had 3 pins enroute to his title at 120 pounds, while Tommy Thorn was dominate at 126 pounds with 2 pins and a major decision, in the finals. Also earning “All-Conference” distinction by placing 3rd were: Donnie Leuer (138), Lucas Jeske (152), and Ryan Jones (182). 106 pounder Zach Nygaard placed 4th, Eavn Foster placed 5th, and Jeff Geiger (132) placed 6th, as other STMA placewinners.

The Mississippi-8 had previously not had an individual conference tourney, but with the conference expanding to 10 teams, the wrestling coaches decided on the new format to determine “All-Conference” individuals, since all conference teams did compete against each other in duals during the regular season.

In other STMA wrestling competition, the STMA 9th grade team had 8 individuals compete in the State 9th Grade League held at Champlin Park High School on Saturday February 1st and came away with 2nd place as a team with 4 State placewinners. Cody Schoen won the individual State title at 132 pounds for the Knights. Max Jensen placed 2nd at 145 pounds, while Patrick McKee (94) and Zach Dehmer (113) each placed 3rd.

The Knights varsity will travel to Inver Grove Heights to wrestle Simley in a dual meet on Thursday February 6th. Simley is rated number one in Class “AA”, while the Knights are rated number two in class “AAA”. Then on Friday February 7th, STMA hosts Glencoe-Silver Lake in a dual.
