Since Francesca Wilson took over as the head coach of the Osseo High dance team three years ago, she has been working hard to build the Orioles into a successful program.
“My assistant coach Megan McDonough and I took over and have really been building the varsity program over the last three seasons,” Wilson said. “We hope to keep growing and become contenders in the future.”
Gradually, Wilson is seeing results and improvement.
“Last year in Jazz at NWSC finals we got an average of 49.66 while this year we got an average of 55.14,” Wilson said. “Last year in High Kick at NWSC finals we got an average of 44.5 while this year we got an average of 54.0.”
To boost numbers in the program, the team started a co-op with Maranatha Christian Academy two seasons ago.
The Orioles also have some talented dancers who have done well individually. Two dancers, ninth grader Kaylee Andersen and sophomore Sarah Harris, competed in the Miss Dance Team Minnesota solo competition in October. Another dancer, junior Mia Smutny, was named to the NWSC All-Conference Team. Smutny and junior Christie Watson have been nominated for the All-State jazz team and juniors Meagan Maurer and Faye McGuire have been nominated for the All-State high kick team.
“All four are 11th graders and we will not find out if they made all-state until mid-February,” Wilson said.
With talented individuals and increasing number, Wilson is looking for the Osseo High dance program to continue to grow and improve.
