By Bruce Strand

The Rogers Royals dominated the third period to defeat St. Michael-Albertville 5-2 on Saturday, Jan. 8, in Albertville.

The score was 2-2 after two periods but Rogers outshot the Knights 18-4 in the third period with Matt Hellickson, Nate Weber and Dustin Schoepke all puncturing the net in the first nine minutes.

Rogers improved to 12-3-1 and the Knights fell to 7-8-1.

Weber also scored in the first period along with Mitchell Motter. The Knights  drew even with Logan Nelson and Cody Reckard scoring in the second period.

Rogers goalie Jackson Nelson stopped 18 of 20 shots and STMA’s Kyle Hayden 36 of 41.

Alexander Lorman and Travis Brown each assisted on two goals, and Spencer Marchand, Schoepke, Branden Cecil, Blake Timm and Nolan Walker one each.

In earlier action, the Royals won an outdoor game  3-1 over Achiever Academy Thursday, Jan. 16, at the Handke Pit in Elk River.

On a cold evening, 12 degrees with a biting wind, the Royals took their turn participating in Elk River’s Hockey Day in Minnesota week-long series of games on the outdoor rink constructed for the event.

The opponent was suppose to be Fergus Falls but the Otters elected not to make the long trip in dangerous weather. Achiever Academy, a second-year hockey-based school in Vadnais Heights, took their place.

After a scoreless first period, the Royals (11-3) heated up, at least with regard to scoring, in the second period.  Brandon Cecil connected at 2:06 (Jason Roberge assisting), Trent Fredrickson at 7:28 (Dustin Schoepke, Nick Przybilla) and Cecil again at 15:19 (Roberge, Alexander Lorman).

Travis Marsh got Achiever (9-5-2) on the board in the third period.

There were only two penalties, both on Rogers. The Royals had a 30-23 edge in shots. Jackson Nelson made 22 saves for Rogers and Sage Broda 27 for Achiever.

Rogers was to host Monticello-Annandale-Maple Lake on Thursday.
