Delano succeeds in one of two boys basketball comeback bids

Delano did a much better job at finishing a comeback win during the second two boys basketball games last week. The Tigers lost 55-49 to Waconia, bouncing back to beat Mound-Westonka 57-43.

Delano took an 11-10 lead before Waconia went on a 7-0 run to finish the half up 25-19. After Waconia pushed the lead to 11 in the second half, the Tigers battled back to cut the lead to three, but could not get any closer.

Waconia is a big team, going 6-8, 6-7 and 6-6 with another player at 6-8 coming off the bench. Coach Terry Techam said Damon Longstreet had an excellent game with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Toby Hanson had 13 points, five assists and four rebounds. Matt Kreklow provided seven points and six rebounds and Sean Campbell added seven points with four assists.

Delano fell behind Mound 16-10 before responding with an 8-1 run to go up 18-17 at the half. The Tigers got the offense going much better in the second half, outscoring MW 39-26.

Hanson scored 23 out of his 25 points in the second half. Techam said the senior attacked the basket and finished 11 for 13 from the free throw line. Longstreet came through with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Kreklow had five points, four rebounds, three steals, three assists and he did a nice job guarding one of Mound’s better offensive players. Campbell added seven points with three rebounds.

Delano improved to 12-3 overall. Hanson is averaging 21.9 points per game. The team plays at New London-Spicer Friday, Jan 24, is home to Hutchinson Tuesday, Jan. 28 and is home against Litchfield Thursday, Jan. 30.


The gymnasts split two meets last week, defeating Orono 128.1 to 125.3 and falling to Annandale 131.42 to 129.575.

Against Orono, Amelia Sutherland won the balance beam and uneven bars events. The senior is still slowed by injury and not able to work on all events. Alaina Johnson was Delano’s top all-arounder, placing fourth.

Other fourth-place honors went to Alexus Aguirre on bars, Paige Hagen on vault and Sam VanCura on floor exercise.

The team competes at Dassel-Cokato Friday, Jan. 24 and is home against Glencoe-Silver Lake Thursday, Jan. 30.


The wrestling squad travels to Annandale Thursday, Jan. 23 for matches against Maple Lake and New London-Spicer. Delano goes to the Spectrum Invitational Friday, Jan. 24 and is at Orono Monday, Jan. 27 for matches against Litchfield and Dassel-Cokato.
