Basketball: Royal boys beat Duluth East 71-59

The Rogers Royals salvaged one win in the Tartan Holiday Tournament, defeating Duluth East 71-59 Dec. 27, the seventh-place game.

Cole Murray led the Royals with 21 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. The 6-9 junior made the all-tournament team, logging 68 points in three games.

Allen Wilson added 13 points and three steals, and Gunnar Bloom 12 points and five assists.

The Royals (4-6) snapped a five-game skid, including losses to Forest Lake and Centennial at the Tartan tournament.

Chaz McBeath scored 23 for Duluth East (0-8).

In other action, two Delano standouts combined for 56 points as the Tigers defeated the Rogers Royals 70-57 Jan. 3 in Rogers.

Senior guard Toby Hanson poured in 29 points, and senior forward Damon Longstreet, back from missing four games with an ankle injury, added 27 points as the Tigers improved to 10-2.

Sawyer Thompson hit five 3-pointers and led Rogers (4-7) with 15 points. Cole Murray logged 14 points and nine rebounds.

The Tigers made 11 of 15 free shots including eight down the stretch that expanded their leads.
