Osseo opened the season with a 93-93 tie at Elk River in Northwest Suburban Conference boys’ swim and dive action Thursday, Dec. 12.
The Orioles led most of the meet but the Elks grabbed a late lead and Osseo trailed by two points entering the final event, the 400 free relay. The Osseo team of Jake Rear, Jonah Smith, Josh Deruyter and Nolan Vander Ploeg came through with a first place and gave Osseo the tie.
Vander Ploeg had a big night, winning two individual events and swimming on two first-place relays. Tim Van Laarhoven also won two individuals and swam on one winning relay.

The second-place 200 free relay team of Dylan Croonquist, Deruyter, Joe Nelson, Van Laarhoven
Van Laarhoven took first in the 200 freestyle and in the 100 freestyle
Sam Bethke took second in diving
Isaac Lessard took third in the 100 breaststroke
Dennis Pham took third in the 500 freestyle
Jonah Smith took third in the 100 backstroke
Rear took third in the 50 freestyle and 1st in the 100 butterfly
Croonquist took second in the 50 freestyle and 2nd in the 100 freestyle
Joe Beaman took third in the 100 backstroke
Vander Ploeg took first in the 200 individual medley and in the 500 freestyle
Nelson took third in the 200 individual medley and in the 100 butterfly
