When Dr. Eric Carlson, DDS, took over Northwest Family Dental Center in St. Michael, he had ambitious plans to build a comfortable, modern, tech-savvy clinic that would cater to the busy schedules of families by remodeling and keeping up with the newest innovations.

Two years later he is happy to report the clinic has and is continuing to improve in all dimensions.

Northwest Family Dental Center offers all general dental services and in some cases specialty care. One of the things that sets them apart is the ability to do exam to finished crowns in a single day. The advantage is in the CEREC machine. The Computer-aided Design (CAD) based system uses a camera to scan the mouth instead of the goopy, gagging impressions. The computer is connected to a ceramic milling unit via WiFi that creates the finished crown in a very short time right at the clinic.

The CEREC can design single to multiple crowns, veneers, fillings, bridges, implants, and recently has been used to scan the mouth for nightguards. Also, Carlson has recently incorporated Clear Alignment Therapy (Clear Correct) for invisible braces and can use the Cerec to scan the mouth instead of the standard gagging impressions, giving the laboratory far more accurate data. Dr. Carlson believes the philosophy behind Clear Correct is better than Invisalign therapy.

Some other amenities that Northwest Family Dental Center provides are digital X-rays rather than film based. Digital X-rays require 80% less radiation which are far safer for both patients and staff. Carlson has been utilizing Intraoral cameras to help educate the patients of their dental needs. The pictures can be easily displayed on a wall monitor for patients to reference what the doctor sees. In some cases the pictures ensure insurance coverage. Nitrous Oxide is available for patients requiring pain and anxiety management. Carlson utilizes a Sonic handpiece for composite, white fillings. The sonic wave and agitation help to better adapt the filling to the internal aspect of the tooth and therefore improve the quality of fill and longevity. The newest technology with root canals has been incorporated into the office as well. Carlson is a firm believer in the latest technology as it is continually advancing the outcomes as well as improving the process and therefore overall dental experience.

“Our fees have remained stable and we are not planning on raising our fees at this time. It is our desire to accept most insurance plans as we believe we have one of the best services to offer to patients. In fact we are currently working on adding an in-house insurance plan to further help all of our current and new patients. The plan would cover all preventative procedures and would include discounted rates off the standard fees for all restorative procedures. We also offer Care Credit which through application one can receive 0% financing for 12 plus months. Our testimonials have been remarkable and our referrals from current patients have been strong. We are happy with how we are treating all patients as we strive to live out our mission to serve. My philosophy is quality, comfortable dentistry at an affordable price and technology has helped make that possible,” Carlson said.

Carlson graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry with honors in 2005. He practiced for 6-and-a-half years at Park Dental before acquiring this practice from Dr. David Desimone in 2011. Except for a new office manager earlier this year the staff has remained the same. “You will be greeted with smiles, and will leave smiling because of the experience you have had,” Carlson said.

“I feel blessed to be in the field of dentistry where I can provide all the aspects of gentle, quality care for my patients,” he said.
