Crimson swim and dive girls celebrate successful season

The Maple Grove girls’ swimming and diving team celebrated their 2013 success at a season-ending banquet Dec. 5.

First-year head coach Angela Zangl congratulated the girls on their successful season, which ended with a 7-1 dual meet record, first place at JV Conference, and second place at both True Team Sections and the Section 8AA Championships. Zangl thanked the girls for their hard work all season and expressed her gratitude to the senior captains, Kristina Rudin, Molly Hebzynski, Edyn Issacs, and Lauren Biorn, for their leadership and commitment to the team.

Diving coach Juli Bombalier praised all of the divers for their progress and successful season. Bombalier, also in her first season with the team, shared her appreciation for the support all the girls showed to one other on deck.

In the awards portion of the program, 40 athletes were recognized as 2013-14 varsity letter winners. Hennessy Locsin, Rose Gallagher, Raeshawn Payton, Erin Buck, Vivian Nguyen, Kristina Rudin, and Molly Hebzynski were named to the All-Conference team, and Emily Sjolander, Hebzynski, Buck, Rudin and Locsin were recognized as the team’s state participants.

Several Crimson swimmers were recognized with special team awards. The award for being the most motivational was given to senior Hebzynski. Freshman Gallagher earned the most improved award for dropping time meet after meet.  The Crimson Award for best representation of the Crimson Athlete went to Hebzynski.

The swimming MVP was awarded to Erin Buck and the diving MVP went to Lauren Biorn.  The final set of awards went to three athletes who were recognized as the hardest workers on the team: the JV swimming hardest worker was Carolyn Palmer, the diving hardest worker was Allison Schulte, and the varsity swimming hardest worker was Kristina Rudin.

The seniors recognized all of the younger athletes on the team, thanked the three student managers, Alex Robb, Matt Ang and Chris Orner, and expressed appreciation to the coaching staff for their hard work throughout the season.

The evening ended with a video highlighting memories from the season and 2013-14 captains Rudin, Hebzynski, Biorn, and Edyn Isaacs announcing that current juniors Emily Sjolander, Sarah Dill, Erin Buck, and Rosie Garvey have been selected as the 2014-15 captains.
