Comeback win keeps girls hockey in league driver’s seat

BY DAVE PEDERSEN

Just like facing big snow drifts last week, the local girls hockey team had to dig out of some deficits in weekend games, sometimes getting stuck.

The Bison fell behind against conference rival Chisago Lakes 2-0 Friday before coming back to win 4-2. Saturday, the team was down 3-0 against Maple Grove and was not able to move out of the hole in what was a rare shutout.

Against Chisago Lakes, Madi Jewell and Rylan Bistodeau notched second period goals to tie the game. The Bison grabbed the lead on a goal by Kirsten Olson and iced the win with an empty net goal by Abby Halluska. The win kept the Bison in the driver’s seat on top of the Mississippi 8 conference standings.

Maple Grove scored a goal in each period, including an empty netter to win 3-0. Coach Ray Dahlof said Kendra Carlson played very well in goal to keep the game close.

Earlier last week it was smooth sailing for the team that includes players from Delano, Rockford and Buffalo in a 4-2 league win over rival North Wright County. The Bison jumped to a 3-2 lead in the first period on goals by Halluska, Ashley Effertz and Jewell. In the second period Rylan Bistodeau scored on a power play.  Helped by seven power plays, the Bison had a 50-22 edge in shots on goal.

The Bison are home at to Rogers at Buffalo Arena Friday, Dec. 13. Saturday, the team faces Eden Prairie at Plymouth Arena as part of the Lake Conference Showcase. The team plays at Edina Tuesday, Dec. 17 and at Centennial Thursday, Dec. 19.

Boys fit to be tied

The Delano-Rockford boys hockey team worked for a 2-2 tie against Chanhassen in the lone game last week, improving to 2-1-1 on the season.

Goals were scored by Chet Halonen and Jack Nelson. Tyler Rizzardi made 40 saves in goal. The team is home to Totino Grace Thursday, Dec. 12, at Bloomington Kennedy Tuesday, Dec. 17 at home against Waconia Thursday, Dec. 19.
