Following is a preview of the Rogers Dance Team, which opened Monday with a first-place finish at a conference jazz meet at Chisago Lakes.

Coach — Meg Leonard (head), Jessica Grover (assistant), Cassie Martin and Jenna Schrap (JV)

Last year —  1st in conference, 6th (jazz) and 7th (kick) at section

Captains — Jill Brinkman (sr), Jessie Hammer (sr), Madi Nelson (sr), Allie Getz (jr), Kianna Koeppe (jr)

Turnout — 44 dancers

Bigger conference — Mississippi 8 now has 7 teams with newcomers Chisago Lakes, St. Francs and North Branch joining Rogers, Monticello, Big Lake, and Buffalo. Schedule includes 2 jazz meets, 2 kick meets and conference finals.

Coach says — “We are working really hard to keep the conference title. We have won the title 5 of the last 6 years, so even with the new teams added, that is a goal for the team this year … Captains fill locker room with inspiring quotes. One that the team goes by is by Derek Jeter: “There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for anyone to work harder than you do.”

New invitationals — Rogers will host an invitational for the first time, on Dec. 7, taking the plays of the Best of the Best performance show. It will have 3 varsity divisions, plus JV and middle school.
