Both the Delano and Hamel communities will pause to remember military veterans who have died and thank living veterans who have served. Events will take place in Hamel on Saturday, Nov. 9, and in Delano on Monday, Nov. 11.
In Hamel both the public and veterans are invited to attend a donation breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hamel VFW post, located on Hamel Road just east of Brockton Lane. A program will follow at 9 a.m. Hamel Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5903 and the Hamel American Legion Post 394 will serve as joint sponsors for the event. Jim Heimerl, a member of both the Legion and the VFW, will serve as host. He asked veterans to wear uniforms if possible.
In Delano, the public is invited to attend the traditional Veterans Day program that will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Tiger Activity Center in Delano High School. The Delano American Legion post is planning the event. To avoid parking problems at the high school, the Legion is offering an 8:45 a.m. bus. Departure point will be the Delano Legion post located on Bridge Avenue at Highway 12. A short program will take place at the Delano Legion Memorial at 11 a.m.
Delano Legion Commander John Sweet called the event “one of the Post’s important Americanism programs.” The Legion will educate the audience on flag folding. Essay scholarship contest winners will tell the audience “What the U.S. Constitution means to me.”
The Delano Legion’s Veterans Day program will take place at the post beginning with a 6 p.m. potluck dinner. A 7 p.m. program will end the day’s events.
