Independence voters re-elect Linda Betts, Brad Spencer to city council

IndependenceCityHallVoters in Independence re-elected Linda “Lynn” Betts and Brad Spencer to their city council seats in city elections, Tuesday, Nov. 5. They were unopposed on the ballot.

Betts received 344 votes and Spencer received 354 votes. Voters cast 23 write-in ballots. Vote tallies are unofficial until ratified by the city council.

Independence had 2,565 voters registered as of 7 a.m. for this off-year election.

Betts and Spencer will begin their new four-year terms on Jan. 1. Serving with them in 2014 will be current city council members Brad Fisher and Norm Wenck and Mayor Marvin Johnson.

Betts has served on the city council since 2002. Prior to that she served on the Independence Park Board. She has worked as an office manager for a certified public accounting firm. Since 1966 she has taught piano, directed church choirs and played piano for church services.

Spencer has served on the Independence City Council since January, 2010. Prior to that he was a city planning commissioner for six years and was planning commission chair for 15 months. He works as a financial consultant for a financial consulting firm.
