Osseo took seventh in the boys’ race and 10th in the girls’ meet at the Section 5 cross country meet at Anoka Oct. 24.

Several Orioles came close to state qualification and many runners improved their times, but the section opponents were better.

“We found the section meet to be bitter-sweet,” Osseo coach John Rundquist said. “Each of the kids went out and raced their hearts out.  It was tough to see three of our runners just a couple spots off of qualifying individually for the state meet. Section 5AA is getting stronger each year and we are learning that first hand.  You can run faster, but ultimately it comes down to placing and that piece did not line up for us as we had hoped.”

BOYS

Adam Berkowitz and Mitchell Cramer led Osseo with strong races and fell just short of qualifying for the state meet despite running 16:29 and 16:31.

“The boys were shooting to break 17:00 minutes for the top-five average, which they did with 16.:56, but our improvements were met by other teams in our section,” Rundquist said.  “Our  four senior boys Adam Berkowitz, Alex Naughton, Tanner Wetzel, and Jason Schulte wrapped up great careers and will leave a special imprint on the program.”

Osseo runners:  14. Adam Berkowitz, 16:29.0, 16. Mitch Cramer, 16:31.8; 35. Alex Naughton 17:03.2; 38. Tanner Wetzel,          17:06.6, 54. Mitchell Dehmer, 17:31.9, 71. Jason Schulte, 17:52.1, 76.  Luc Robichaud, 17:56.9.

GIRLS

The girls’ squad took 10th out of 16 teams with Maddy Hvidston falling just short of qualifying for the state meet.

“It was great to see our three ninth grade girls run their best races of the season which included Taylor Christen, Joanna Lee, and Alliana Houfek,” Rundquist said. “Overall, they averaged 16:08, which is the best time Osseo has had in the past seven or so years.  It was special to see seniors Jenny Schoenrock and Megan Nelson wrap up their careers with all-time best times.”
