Both the Maple Grove boys’ and girls’ soccer teams advanced to the section soccer finals, played  Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The Crimson got goals from Michal Berratt and Ben Zaver in their 2-0 semifinal win over Park Center.

The Crimson beat Spring Lake Park 3-0 in the quarterfinal with three second-half goals. Kevin Hoof headed in a cross from Daniel Cortez, then Cortez made it 2-0 with assists from Carson Thomas and Sam Gardner and Reid Diamond got the final tally with help from Ali Kowsari.

Defenders Ryan Petersen, Kowsari, Vladimir Maltsev, Gardner and Johnathon Piotraschke were impenetrable across the back, taking turns shutting down any attacks, in both games. Goal keeper Ben Nelson posted two clean sheets during the section playoff games, adding to the six shutouts he had during the regular season.

GIRLS

The girls defeated Centennial 2-1 in the semifinal on a goal by Madison Carey assisted by Amanda Travis with four minutes left. Maple Grove, which lost to Centennial 5-0 earlier this season, also got a goal from McKenna Peplinski, her first of the year, with an assist from Breanna Johnson. The Crimson received a brilliant effort from defenders Jackie Ehlert, Samantha Boonstra, Carolyn Griffith and Natalie Engel and senior goalie Casey Autey.
