The Hamel, Loretto and Rockford fire departments are cooking up their open houses and educational efforts for National Fire Prevention Week, which begins Sunday, Oct. 6.
The focus this year is on preventing kitchens fires and what to do if one flares up. Both the Loretto and Hamel volunteer fire departments will talk about dangers in kitchens at the open houses.
Hamel Fire’s open house will launch Fire Prevention week from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at the fire station, 92 Hamel Road, Medina. Activities will include a grease fire demonstration from 2-3 p.m., a visit from the North Memorial helicopter from 3-4 p.m. and an auto extrication demonstration from 4-5 p.m. Other activities will be station tours, fire truck rides, hose spraying, tattoos, a photo booth, relay races, a silent auction, food and drink.
Loretto Fire’s open house will wrap up Fire Prevention Week from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at the fire station, 259 N. Medina St. (County Road 19) in Loretto. Visitors are invited to dine on a pig roast (donations accepted), watch demonstrations, take fire truck rides, enter free drawings and compete in a silent auction. Games and inflatable play structures will be available for children. Firefighters will meet the public and provide tours of the fire station.
