St. Thomas garage sale

1,000 Books

SEPT. 16 — The St. Michael Public Library will begin its 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program on Monday, Sept. 16. This fun reading program for children ages 0 to 5 years tracks their progress reading and listening to books read by parents and caregivers with a goal of completing 1,000 books before entering kindergarten. That amount of exposure to books and reading prepares children to learn to read and encourages parents to embrace their role as their child’s first teacher. Talk with library staff to register for this program. It is co-sponsored with the St. Michael-Albertville-Hanover Friends of the Library and the Wright County Area United Way. Toddler Storytime

SEPT. 16 — The St. Michael Public Library is offering a Toddler Storytime series that begins Monday, Sept. 16, 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. and continues Mondays through October. Toddler Time focuses on a variety of activities to help toddlers with language and pre-literacy skills. It includes fingerplays, songs and crafts with a new theme each week. MQP Parish Festival

SEPT. 22 — Mary Queen of Peace Parish Festival is Sunday, Sept. 22, at St. Martin Church Campus, 21304 Church Ave., Rogers. Festivities will begin at 10 am and will end with the Grand Raffle drawing at 5 p.m. The famous chicken dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities include bingo, pull tabs, silent auction, farmers market, craft booth, cake walk, games and more. Food court: pork chops, hamburgers, hot dogs, pie, ice cream, popcorn, soda and beer. This festival is packed full of activities for the whole family.

SEPT. 26 — A pork chop supper and Silent Auction, including old clock face from St. Michael Historic Church, is Friday, Sept. 27 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the St Michael American Legion (Liberty Bar). Hosted by the Historic Church Preservation Committee.

Cole’s Cause

SEPT. 28 — The second Annual Cole’s Cause Benefit is Saturday, Sept. 28, 5:30 to 11 p.m. at Broadway Bar and Pizza, 21431 141st Ave., Rogers. Tickets are $10 at the door. Join again this year to raise funds for Children’s Hospitals New Neuroscience Center. It will be an evening of live music featuring the bands, “Short on Cash” and “Hollow Point” There will also be a silent auction and wine raffle.  Cole Buckingham died in January 2009 from a complication of a neurological disease. He was an amazing, intelligent, funny little boy that will always be remembered. His name will be on one of the nutrition rooms at the new center.

St. John’s 5K walk

SEPT. 28 — The Malaria Melee 5K run/walk will be Saturday Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 9141 County Rd. 101, Corcoran. Race Day Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. T-shirts, snacks and refreshments included with registration. Prizes for top male and female runner. Prize drawings for all participants immediately following the race. Proceeds go to Lutheran Malaria Initiative. Register to save money and be guaranteed a race shirt. Fire Up 5K

SEPT. 28 — The Tim Larson Memorial Fund Fire Up 5K walk and run is Saturday, Sept. 28, behind STMA Middle School West, 11343 50th St., Albertville. Registration is at 8 a.m., race at 9. Register by Sept. 21 for $20 to guarantee a t-shirt. Race day registration is $25, extra shirts will be available while they last. Kids can race this year, students 18 and under pay $10 for the 5K. The course winds through the city of Albertville. Former STMA teacher Tim Larson was killed tragically Oct. 18, 2011. He was an avid runner, having finished 15 marathons. Concert in the Park

SEPT. 29 — The Hanover Park Board has organized a FREE concert in the park event for Saturday, Sept. 29. The band White Sidewalls will be playing music from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Settlers Park. This is a family event so everyone is invited. Bring lawn chairs.

HC Farm Bureau meeting

SEPT. 30 — Hennepin County Farm Bureau President, Marvin Johnson, announces the Annual Meeting will be Monday, Sept. 30, at the Corcoran City Center. A buffet dinner will be served from 7:15 to 8 p.m. Each paid Farm Bureau membership will receive one free dinner. Non members are welcome. Many door prizes will be given. The Corcoran City Center is located on County Road 116 between County Roads 30 and 10. Guests are welcome. Tree planting demonstration

OCT. 5 — Think you know how to plant a tree? Think again. There is an “epidemic of failure of trees” planted by human hands and it’s all due to the development of faulty root systems. Learn the two simple things you must know before you plant another tree at a hands-on tree planting demonstration Saturday, Oct. 5, at 10 a.m. at Mallard Park, Hanover (Take River Road north to 11th street east (right), park is on the left). Janet McDaniel, a Minnesota Tree Care Advisor who lives in Hanover will conduct the tree planting and can answer other questions like how often to water, what type of tree is best to plant, what is transplant shock, etc. The correct way to plant a tree needs to be learned and passed on to family and friends so we can all enjoy their beauty and benefits.

German Fest

OCT. 12 — A German Fest is being planned for Saturday, Oct. 12, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the St. Michael City Center, 11800 Town Center Dr. NE, St. Michael. Featuring German dinner, beer and the “Mellow Nights” Band. Roast pork, bierstube sausages, sauerkraut, German potato salad rolls, German chocolate cake, apple pie and coffee. Catered by Dehmer’s, buffet service at 6 P.M. Advance tickets: $20 Adults – $15 ages 12 and younger, on sale through Oct. 5 at Coborn’s Albertville, St. Michael FYCC  and Crow River Senior Center. At the door tickets, adults $30; $15 ages 12 and younger, advanced tickets encouraged. Ticket includes dinner and music. Cash bar and prize drawings. Proceeds Benefit St. Michael-Albertville Rotary Club and other community programs. Presented by St. Michael-Albertville Rotary Club.
