At the very least the Orono School Board will have one new member following this November’s election.

With three board seats open, four candidates – two incumbents and two newcomers – filed to appear on November’s ballot.

The candidates that filed before the Aug. 13 deadline were Sarah Borchers, Don Germanson, incumbent Bob Tunheim and incumbent Martha Van de Ven. The third board member whose seat expires at the end of the year – Mike Johnson – did not file for re-election.

Following the end of the filing period, each of the candidates expressed why they are running for the board.

Sarah Borchers

“It would be an honor to be a part of the Orono School Board, as I believe it is an effective team dedicated to ensuring Orono’s continued excellence. As volunteer leader with an MBA, I bring strategic planning, communication, budgeting and facilitation skills to the table. As a parent of two young kids at Orono, I am committed to ensuring a safe environment for all students, where they can grow into career and college-ready young adults. And as a long-time resident in the district, I understand the importance of balancing the interests of students, teachers and community members.”

Don Germanson

“Orono Schools is an excellent school district and I will work to make it better.  I will bring the following to the school board: a fresh review, an inquiring mind, and experience in the District. I will promote the latest technology, include others, and share outcomes with all. We can move forward from an excellent school to the very best.”

Bob Tunheim

“It has truly been a privilege to work with our exceptional teachers, administrators, staff, parents and students over the past four years, and I would very much appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve on what has been a board that functions at an extraordinarily high level. I strongly believe our schools are our community’s greatest asset, and I would be pleased to be able to help them continue and build upon their tradition of excellence.”

Martha Van de Ven

“I have enjoyed working for our children while serving on the Orono School Board for the past 22 years. More importantly, I am eager to continue to work with my fellow Board members, talented staff, involved parents, and exceptional students on some additional programs that will enhance learning for all of our students and continue Orono’s tradition and goal of excellence. I will be honored to continue to serve our children.”

More detailed profiles of each candidate will appear in the Sun Sailor Voter’s Guide prior to the election.
