Local farmers grow for a cause

Community favorite Charlie’s Fresh Sweet Corn of Brooklyn Park has been giving fresh corn to CROSS Food Shelf for several years. Last year, the family-owned farm generously donated to CROSS over 4,500 pounds of fresh corn.

Fresh produce is a hot commodity at CROSS, which receives donations from a multitude of local farmers throughout the growing season. For clients, the fruits and vegetables provide a healthy option.

Recently, the century-old farm was forced to relocate due to impending road construction on Highway 169. Faced with eminent domain seizures, the farm was moved to the opposite side of the highway. The stand is now located at 8916 93rd Ave. N. in Brooklyn Park, between the highway and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

CROSS Food Shelf provides food, clothing, seasonal children’s programs, limited financial assistance, and Meals on Wheels to families living in the communities of Corcoran, Dayton, Maple Grove, Osseo, Rogers and west Champlin.

Now based in Rogers, CROSS has been operating for nearly four decades. Over 600 families each month benefit from services provided by CROSS, which is supported by volunteers and community donations from businesses, churches, schools, and other organizations.
