Delano’s tennis team hopes to start another good run to the top in what will be a rebuilding year for coach Kim Finn.

The Tigers graduated eight of the top players from the team that went 15-1, with the only loss coming in the Section 2AA championship match against state power Minnetonka.

“We are looking at possibly having five ninth-graders in the starting 12,” said Finn. “In the first week of practice we had 32 girls out in grades 9-12.”

Returning to the roster is senior Cassy Finn, juniors Tayler Hedtke and Amy Max, senior Alex Schreyer and ninth-graders Katie Schleif and Ginger Valentine.

Finn says the singles lineup is young with Valentine taking the No. 1 spot, followed by Schleif at No. 2, ninth-grader Kitty Bonine at No. 3 and either Max or junior Anna Schleper at No. 4 singles.

Cassy Finn and Hedtke will team up at No. 1 doubles. Schreyer and ninth-grader Jackie Damberg will work at No. 2 doubles and seniors Hayley Griffiths and Hailey Hunter are at No. 4 doubles.

Rounding out the top 12 will be ninth-graders Natalie Pupp and Stephanie Almquist.

The first event of the season is the Delano tournament, starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, played at both Delano and Orono. Delano plays at Minnetonka for a quadrangular event, 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 23. The other teams are Chanhassen and Owatonna.

The first home dual match is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 against New London-Spicer. The Tigers play at Litchfield Thursday, Aug. 29.
