Sixth Annual Maple Grove Days 40 Winks Bed Race has its winners

The Maple Grove Days Bed Race Committee has announced the winners of this year’s Sixth Annual 40 Winks Bed Race, presented by the Maple Grove Rotary. This year 22 beds were donated to CROSS Food Shelf, and additionally $450 was raised to purchase bedding for those in need.

Congratulations to the fastest bed, Henningson & Snoxell. Holding the record for the most creative year after year is Z’s Smokin’ Bonez.  Best spirit is Kalla Lily and most funds raised, Seeds to Seedings Day Care.

Special thanks to the Maple Grove Rotary for organizing the bed race committee, Maple Grove Covenant for designing the race and the Maple Grove Community Organization for allowing the bed race to be a part of Maple Grove Days events. All prizes awarded to the racers, was then donated to the 40 Winks Foundation.

This year before the race began, the beds promenaded around the track, Color Guard Boy Scout Pack 84 and Chuck Skajewski sang a very moving National Anthem acappella. Pump It Up provided PA system and the basket ball game for the race. The Maple Grove Ambassadors assisted in selecting the bed race winners.

The race consisted of double elimination, the first part of the race “Shorts Shoe,” racers where challenged by Pump It Up’s basketball game, which consisted of dribbling and making a basket. Then, they had to select a team member to wear flip-flops while dribbling a basketball and scoring a basket.

Second part of the race is called “Cinderella” pumpkin relay. Team members were challenged to tossing water balloons to each other without dropping. If they dropped it, they started all over again. Then, bed racers chose a member to be “Prince Charming” or “Princess Charming” and they had to swagger over to the audience presenting to a flower to someone in the crowd.

While the committee determined the final round racers, Master Gin Foon Mark, Chinese Monk and Kung Fu master and his instructors entertained the crowd with a Chinese “Lion Dance. The final round was called “Cinderella’s Clean up” and bed racers had to sweep up flip-flops and shoes and then finally collecting bringing them to the finish line.
