Maple Grove, Osseo Libraries keep summer fun during August

The Maple Grove and Osseo Libraries will be hosting events throughout August. Some of the events include those for kids, teens, adults and a book sale.

Upcoming events at the Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., include:

“Paws to Read,” Thursday, Aug. 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. — For families with kids entering kindergarten through grade four. Certified volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a dog or other animal and practice reading aloud. Call ahead to find out what types of animals will be visiting. Registration required and limited to 12. Registration begins the day of the program. Drop-ins welcome. Presented in collaboration with North Star Therapy Animals.

“Art Out of the Box: Handmade Portraits,” Thursday, Aug. 1, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register for those entering grades two to five. Museum-trained teens will take you on a hands-on exploration of portraits from the museum. Turn an idea of self-image on its head with a playful approach to a timeless art form. Leave with a sketchbook to keep drawing whenever inspiration strikes. Presented in partnership with Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Funded by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.

“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register for girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting.

Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. What We’re Reading: Aug. 6 on “The Klipfish Code,” by Casanova, Mary.

“Friends Meeting,” Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m. — Join fellow library enthusiasts to hear what’s happening at Hennepin County Library. Help support the library by planning and volunteering at book sales, programs and special events. The Friends look forward to meeting participants. General membership meeting.

“Teen Anime Club,” Thursday, Aug. 8, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — For teens. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Guys Read Kids Book Club,” Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Register for guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. What We’re Reading: Aug. 14 is “NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society,” by Buckley, Michael.

 

The Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave., will host the following upcoming events:

“Act Out for Kids: Creative Movement,” Monday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — Register for those entering grades one and two. Learn how to walk like a bear, creep like a tiger or be like a tiny fly. An experienced Guthrie teaching artist will show participants fun and creative ways to use imaginative movement. See related materials for further information. Find more by searching the library catalog or Ask Us. This project is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Presented in collaboration with Guthrie Theater.

“Used Book Sale,” Friday, Sept. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Bargain hunters and book lovers take note: the Friends of the Library will host a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books, withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public, will be priced $1 or less. Funds raised will benefit the library. Book donations accepted at the library.
