Maple Grove VFW won four straight games to capture the St. Cloud VFW Baseball Tournament championship this past week. The locals won the opening game in this 16-team tournament in blowout fashion, 10-2 over Monticello in five innings.
The Crimson scored five runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Mitch McIntyre, an RBI double by Josh Wente, an RBI triple by Isaac Collins, and an RBI single by Matt Vogl.
Collins reached base three times in the game scoring two runs and plating one RBI. McIntyre finished the game going 3 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.
Eddie Lee got it done on the hill on the way to a win. He allowed two runs over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out one, walked three and surrendered three hits. Maple Grove and St. Cloud Cathedral traded the lead five times, but the Crimson ended up on top with a 4-3 win.
The Crimson finally managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning. A well-executed suicide squeeze by Brett Schulze scored Austin Mathison and gave Maple Grove the lead for good.
Mason McMahon recorded the win for Maple Grove. He allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings. Mason struck out five, walked four and gave up nine hits.
Crimson closer Kyle Anderson put away the final five outs to record the save. The Crimson then cruised past North Saint Paul, 8-0.
Maple Grove scored three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Collins, a wild pitch, and a groundout by Ethan Hendricks.
Collins went a perfect 2-2 at the plate with 2 RBI’s and Hendricks also finished with 2 RBI’s for the Crimson.
Anderson looked sharp on the mound. NSP managed just one hit off the Crimson pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked three and struck out three during his five innings of work.
Maple Grove defeated Rochester Lourdes 4-1 in championship game Sunday.
Matt Vogl went 2-2 and delivered a web gem on a diving catch in foul territory, sparking Maple Grove VFW to a victory.
Maple Grove relied on Schulze to eat up innings en route to the win. He pitched seven innings and allowed no earned runs, three hits and two walks while striking out five.
Rochester Lourdes managed to score one run in the first inning on an error.
Maple Grove stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on an error and a groundout by McIntyre. The Crimson scored one run in the fourth inning when Mason McMahon singled, stole second, and was plated by an Adam Brant single to right field.
An insurance run was added in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Vogl leadoff double, a Hendricks sacrifice bunt, and a McIntyre RBI single.
The Crimson VFW currently holds a record of 24 wins and 5 losses on the season.
