Get out the heat and enjoy some time at the Maple Grove and Osseo libraries this July. Both libraries will offer events for the entire family.
The Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main St. N., will host the following events:
“Teen Anime Club,” Thursday, July 11, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. — For teens. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.
“Used Book Sale,” Saturday, July 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Bargain hunters and book lovers take note: the Friends of the Library will hold a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books, withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public, will be priced $1 or less. Funds raised will benefit the library. Bag sale of $5 per bag from 3 to 4 p.m.
“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, July 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register in advance. For girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. July 16 is “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon,” by Lin, Grace.
“Yoga and Stories,” Thursday, July 18, from 2 to 3:15 p.m. — Register in advance. For those entering grades three to five. Children’s stories will provide a world where kids and their caregivers can practice yoga postures with imagination. Become stretching dogs and hopping frogs. Play, create, rest and giggle with yoga. Sponsored by Friends of the Hennepin County Library and MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency).
“Baby Storytime,” Fridays, July 19 to Aug. 9, from 10:30 to 11 a.m. — Register in advance. For children from birth to 24 months. Delight and stimulate a baby’s senses with books and music. Build brain power.
“Senior Surf Day,” Wednesday, July 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Register in advance. Learn computer basics, how to navigate and search the Internet and how to access websites of interest to seniors. Get hands-on computer experience with help from representatives of the Senior LinkAge Line. Presented in collaboration with Minnesota Board on Aging and Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging.
“Guys Read Kids Book Club,” Wednesday, July 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Register in advance. For guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. “Anime Showcase,” Thursday, July 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. — For teens. Don’t miss the chance to watch an amazing line-up of Japanese animation on the big screen. “Make This: Art Posters,” Monday, July 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register in advance. For those entering grades six to 12. Create vintage-looking handmade posters or broadsides of favorite bands, books and movies using visual arts materials and techniques. “Author Talk: Sally McGraw,” Monday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m. — Learn about defining your ideal style and dressing your best, and how style impacts self-image. McGraw, author of “Already Pretty,” also will discuss Twin Cities shopping resources. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.
The Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave., will host the following events:
“Art Out of the Box: Handmade Portraits,” Monday, July 22, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Register in advance. For those entering grades two to five. Museum-trained teens will take you on a hands-on exploration of portraits from the museum. Turn an idea of self-image on its head with a playful approach to a timeless art form. Leave with a sketchbook to keep drawing whenever inspiration strikes. Presented in partnership with Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Funded by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.
“Make This: Theatre Masks,” Tuesday, July 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Register in advance. For those entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Is the play your thing? Learn about the history and use of theatre masks. Participants will even create one using various arts and craft materials. Materials provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Osseo Library.
