Maple Grove VFW wins Monticello championship second year in a row

The Maple Grove VFW baseball team captured the Monticello Tournament for the second year in a row with four straight victories this past weekend.

 

ANDERSON LEADS CRIMSON TO 4-0 SHUTOUT

In the opening game an exceptional pitching performance by Kyle Anderson lifted Maple Grove VFW to a 4-0 win. Anderson got the win thanks to 12 strikeouts. He gave up just six hits, while walking none.

Maple Grove scored one run in the third inning on an RBI single by Josh Wente. The Crimson piled on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lukas Burrington’s single got things going, plating Adam Brant. That was followed up by Matt Vogl’s double, scoring Burrington.

 

MAPLE GROVE DOWNS TOTINO GRACE 5-4

With the Crimson down two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, centerfielder Josh Wente executed a double suicide bunt plating the tying runs.  Mason McMahon finished the game with two extra base hits. Austin Mathison, Brett Schulze, Matt Vogl and Ethan Hendricks also finished with multiple hits.

Noah Croaker picked up the win as he allowed four runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked three and surrendered four hits.

 

OFFENSES DOMINATE WITH 19-9 WIN OVER ROSEVILLE

Maple Grove and Roseville lit up the scoreboard on Saturday as they combined for 28 runs. Hendricks and Schulze racked up three RBIs apiece on three hits each, with Hendricks scoring four runs. Third-baseman Vogl chipped in with two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored.

McMahon recorded the win for the Crimson. He allowed three runs on two hits and fanned seven over 3 2/3 innings.

 

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Maple Grove VFW tops St. Anthony in back-and-forth affair, 4-3 in championship game.

Maple Grove and St. Anthony exchanged the lead six times on Father’s Day, but the Crimson ended up on top with a 4-3 win in seven innings.

Down a run entering the seventh, Crimson leadoff hitter Eddie Lee drilled a triple to left-center eventually scoring on a McMahon single, tying the game 3-3.

Maple Grove took the lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Burrington, plating McMahon on a close play at the plate.

Schulze got it done on the mound on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over seven innings. He struck out seven, walked three and surrendered seven hits.

Maple Grove VFW has a current record of 8 -1 on the season.
