Head to the Maple Grove, Osseo Libraries for fun this June

This June the Maple Grove and Osseo Libraries will offer free events during the month for all members of the family.

The Maple Grove Library, 8001 Main Street N., will offer:

“Paws to Read,” Thursday, June 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. — For families. Entering kindergarten to grade four. Certified volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a dog or other animal and practice reading aloud. Call ahead to find out what types of animals will be visiting. Registration required and limit 12. Registration begins the day of the program. Drop-ins welcome. Presented in collaboration with North Star Therapy Animals.

“Act Out for Adults: History of Theater,” Saturday, June 8, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. — Explore some major theater movements in a fun, interactive and inspiring way. An experienced Guthrie teaching artist will provide a peek at how theater from the past connects to the theater today. For both avid theater-goers and people who just have an interest. See related materials for further information. Find more by searching the library catalog or Ask Us. This project is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund. Presented in collaboration with Guthrie Theater.

“Author Talk: Julie Klassen,” Tuesday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. — Klassen, a three-time Christy Award winner for Historical Romance and 2013 Minnesota Book Award finalist for “Tutor’s Daughter,” will talk about her writings. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Make This: Handmade Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” Tuesday, June 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Entering grades two to six. Learn how to design and draw comic characters based on the popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” books. Drawings will be bound into a “diary” book format. Materials provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Teen Anime Club,” Thursday, June 13, and again Thursday, June 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. each day — For teens. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“The Hobbit,” Tuesday, June 18, 2–4 p.m. — Entering kindergarten to grade six. Participants will want to bring their creativity and hobbit-sense to this workshop. Build a hobbit house along with many mythical creatures out of Model Magic to animate a legendary tale. Materials provided. Presented in collaboration with Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Sponsored by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library and MELSA (Metropolitan Library Service Agency).

“Make This: Graphic Novel/Sequential Art,” Thursday, June 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. — Entering grades six to 12. Learn new drawing and painting techniques to create a graphic novel. Blank pre-bound books and other materials will be provided. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library.

“Girls Only Kids Book Club,” Tuesday, June 25, from 2 to 3 p.m. — Girls entering grades four to six. Join other girls to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. Reading — June 25 is Ten Rules for Living with My Sister by Ann Martin, July 16 is Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin and Aug. 6 is The Klipfish Code by Mary Casanova.

“Guys Read Kids Book Club,” Wednesday, June 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Guys entering grades four to six. Join other guys to talk about a great book. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. Sponsored by Friends of the Maple Grove Library. Reading — June 26 is Frindle by Andrew Clements, July 24 is Science Fair by Dave Barry, and Aug. 14 is NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society by Michael Buckley.

 

The Osseo Library, 415 Central Ave. N., will present “Global Folk: Roe Family Singers,” Monday, June 10, at 2 p.m. — For families. All ages. How often do people get to bounce to the rhythms of banjo, guitar, autoharp, washboard and kazoo? Get the whole family dancing with this award-winning homegrown band that plays good-time, old-time hillbilly music. This project is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
