Bed race to benefit children in the Maple Grove area
At Maple Grove Days this year the Rotary Club of Maple Grove is looking to increase donations at the bed race benefiting Slumberland Furniture’s 40 Winks Foundation. Last year, 32 teams entered the race and over $4,800 was raised which was enough funds to buys for 32 beds plus sheets and pillow cases were donated through CROSS. This year, the Rotary club hopes to reach 40 beds.
This is a call for entry for the bed race. Businesses, churches, neighborhoods and individuals, this is a chance to have a lot of fun for a great cause. Applications can be found on the Maple Grove Days website — maplegrovedays.org.
The Slumberland’s 40 Winks Foundation seeks to provide mattresses and beds to children and families lacking these resources to help them attain one of the foundational blocks of life — a full and healthy night’s sleep. For too many children and families across America, getting a good night’s sleep is only something they dream about. 40 Winks Foundation is unique because all the funds raised in a community will see the funds returned to people who need beds.
“We feel this would be a great way to involve the community to have fun and help children in Maple Grove,” said Tom Anderson, Maple Grove Rotarian and Bed Race Chairman. “The Rotary Club of Maple Grove made the decision to help organize and run the bed race because we know there is a need to provide beds for children. Rotary’s mission is to encourage and foster service in the community, and this is a great way to do it.”
40 Winks Foundation Representative Lorrie Link said, “The 40 Winks Foundation was created so the public can participate by donating monetarily to helping children get off the floor at night. One hundred percent of the proceeds donated go back into the community as beds to people in need.”
“The Bed Race brings a lot excitement to Main Street during Maple Days and we’re happy our Rotary club will help run this event. The race is lot of fun and at the same time it will benefit children without beds,” said MGCO President Deb Syhre. “The 40 Winks Foundation will be donating all mattress sets from the race to CROSS, a local charity.”
The public is invited to participate in teams of 5 people (4 people pushing the bed, one person riding). The $150 team entry fee will go towards a purchase of a bed that will be donated to CROSS. Bed racers will be encouraged to collect pledges.
The Maple Grove Days 40 Winks Bed Race is Saturday, July 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Main Street in front of the Town Green.
