Yellow Tree brings back their production of ‘Sylvia’ this summer

Yellow Tree Theatre, 320 Fifth Ave. S.E. in Osseo, is gearing up for their first ever summer show — a remount of their 2009 production of the A.R. Gurney dog play, “Sylvia.”

This play chronicles the story of middle-aged couple, Greg and Kate, who have just settled down in their new cozy Manhattan apartment after twenty years of child-rearing in the suburbs. When Greg, bored and on the verge of a mid-life crisis, brings home his frisky four-legged new friend, Sylvia, the zany action begins. With her soulful brown eyes and adventurous spirit, Sylvia quickly becomes a bone of contention between husband and wife.

When asked why YTT decided to bring back “Sylvia” artistic director Jason Peterson, brings up the countless emails and phone calls he has received since the first production in 2009 requesting to bring it back.

“People went crazy for it and they have been politely demanding to see it again ever since,” said Peterson.

This year Yellow Tree made the leap and moved from a four-show season to five, after exceeding ticket sales goals for the past four years.  While doing a summer show is often-times risky (with severe cases of “cabin fever” running rampant) Peterson decided “Sylvia” would be the perfect show to kick of their new summer slot.

“It’s a fun, ridiculous, sweet and crass play that people, especially dog-lovers, can’t get enough of,” he said.

Yellow Tree is also partnering up with local dog shelter, Second Hand Hounds, for the occasion. Second Hand Hounds will be hosting a live adoption event during the show on June 16, and Yellow Tree will be donating $3 per ticket to Second Hand Hounds for the entire run of the show for anyone who uses the code “HOUND” for online purchases.

Mary Fox, with Yellow Tree, will be reprising her role as the foul-mouthed pup who charms the pants off of unsuspecting middle-aged Greg, played again by Twin Cities’ actor Sean Byrd.

“Sylvia” is starring: Mary Fox, Sean Byrd, Katie Wodele and Tristan Tifft.

Performances of “Syliva” run May 31 through June 23. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. There will be no performance Sunday, June 2.

Tickets are $17 for Wednesdays and Thursdays, $23 for Fridays and Saturdays and $20 for Sundays. Students, seniors 60 and up and groups of 10 or more receive $3 off these prices. Call the Box Office at 763-493-8733 for tickets.
