Eight first-place finishes helped propel the St. Michael-Albertville girls’ track and field team to its first ever conference title at this year’s Mississippi 8 Conference Meet on May 21 at Buffalo.

What was supposed to be a one-day conference meet turned out to be a three-day marathon. Thanks to some wet conditions, field events were postponed Tuesday and resumed both Wednesday and Thursday.

“Each team had to deal with the same adversity,” said STMA girls’ head coach Jason Massmann. “It was constant drizzle and not the weather you like to see for the meet. We had a good day and our athletes really stepped up and competed.”

Among the highlights came in the 3200 run where sophomore Rachel King erased a big deficit to win the event and set a new school record with a time of 11:00.94.

Sophomore Maddie Jesser defended her conference title in the 200 dash. Senior Maddi Sjelin was dropped to the 400-dash and recorded a first-place time of 1:01.78.

Freshman Whitney Perry highlighted the girls’ squad making all-conference in the 100 and 200-dash, along with the triple jump. Jesser, Sjelin, King, junior Erin Autio, senior Treasure Martin, junior Josie Burns and the 4×200 relay team of freshmen Sydney Tracy, Leah Johnson, eighth-grader Lizzy Heil and King all made all-conference.

“This was the girls’ first team championship since the beginning of the Mississippi 8 conference,” Massmann said. “The kids have done a great job the past several years and the championship is well deserved.”
