Tiger lacrosse teams take run at first MSHSL playoffs

Delano will enter the Minnesota State High School League lacrosse playoffs for the first time as new members.

The former club teams finished close to .500 records. The girls went 5-4 in the regular season that was shortened by bad weather and a lack of officials. The boys are 3-4 after going 1-2 last week.

Both teams earned the No. 5 seed in the Section 8 tournament and started on the road Wednesday, May 29, played after this issue went to press.

The winner of the boys Anoka game will travel to face No. 1 seed Wayzata, 1 p.m. Friday, May 31. The section title game is 7 p.m. June 5 at Park Center High School. Orono was the No. 2 seed and Maple Grove was third.

The girls got another crack at St. Michael-Albertville to open the playoffs Wednesday. The Tigers lost 16-13 last week when Kaylah Walstad netted eight goals and her sister Lexie provided seven assists. Aspen Hanson had four goals.

Delano or STMA winner plays at No. 1 seed Elk River Friday, may 31. The title game is 5 p.m. June 5 at Osseo. Maple Grove is the No. 2 seed followed by Becker.

The Tiger girls also lost to Prior Lake 11-8 when Kaylah Walstad scored three goals and Hanson had two. Delano ended the regular season with an 11-10 win over White Bear Lake.

Kayla Walstad led the attack with six goals with one each by four other players. One goal was unaccounted. Kayla led the team in goals with 45 in nine games.

The boys lost to Orono 14-2 and Centennial 8-6 before defeating Simley 5-2 to end the regular season.

Against Centennial, goalie Chip Wills made 12 saves. Aaron Wagner scored four goals and Jack Nelson added two. The defense was paced by Austin Wallace, Kyle Moonen and Jaison Detweiler.
