Osseo lost to top-seeded and highly-ranked Maple Grove in the section boys’ tennis quarterfinal round last week but not before making some noise.
The Orioles advanced to face Maple Grove after they edged Anoka 4-3 in the first round at home. According to Osseo coach John Licciardi, it was the first time Osseo hosted and won a section meet in at least five years.
In the win over Anoka, Osseo received strong showings in first and fourth singles from Peter Berno and Connor Dahlberg to score two wins. Berno took his match over Patrick Gallagher from Anoka 6-0, 7-5. Dahlberg also won his match in consecutive sets over Anoka’s Brendan Rendall 6-3, 6-2.
Osseo won in second and third doubles to secure the winning margin. The second doubles of Trevor Johnson and Josh Mullaney beat Anoka’s Alex flight and Matt Rogezomm 6-3, 6-4. In third doubles, Derek Brown and John Wheatley beat Liam Gullum and Josh Gable 6-0, 6-0.
The Orioles next enter section individual play later this week.
