Preliminary data about improvement by Basswood Elementary students on the state MCA tests recently drove Principal Patrick Smith to the roof. And not figuratively.

Smith recently challenged his students to improve their state MCA test scores, offering to sleep on the roof of the school if they met the school’s improvement goals.

Preliminary results indicate that Basswood students did meet the improvement goal with at least 80 percent of all students meeting or exceeding standards on the MCA tests.

Smith fulfilled his end of the challenge by sleeping on the Basswood Elementary rooftop from 7 p.m. May 16 through 9 a.m. May 17.

He also motivates students in other ways, as well, including offering monthly “Smoothies with Mr. Smith” for students who demonstrate the “Basswood B’s: Be Respectful; Be Responsible; and Be Safe.”
