The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ track and field squad has expectations reaching even higher than its second-place showing at the Section 5AA True Team Meet held May 8th at Buffalo.

In typical true team fashion, every individual result counts towards overall team points and the Knights’ final score of 872 finished second to only Buffalo’s 915.50. It was a small step up from last year’s third-place finish at Sauk Rapids.

“We were pretty excited about this year’s True Team Meet,” said boys’ head coach Curt Hahn. “We have a much deeper team than a year ago and we came into the meet hoping to win it. We finished second, but we could have performed better. We had a couple letdowns at certain spots.”

With a maximum of 27 points handed out for each individual event, STMA had four first-place finishers. Freshman Isaiah Weston won the high jump and senior Brendon Sage won the 3200-meter run.

Senior Brian Ferry – who was named the Ed Bourelle Invite’s Most Valuable Player on May 2 – continued his hot streak finishing first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 110 hurdles. Ferry was also part of the 4×400 relay team that took first with a time 3:31.90. He and senior teammates David Anderson, Cole Krutzig and sophomore Josh Tracy helped carry the baton to victory.

STMA was at Monticello on Tuesday for the Last Chance Meet (results unavailable). Tuesday, May 21 the Knights are back at Buffalo for the Mississippi 8 Conference Meet.

Lady Knights finish third

Unlike the boy’s results, STMA girls’ head coach Jason Massmann came into this year’s True Team Meet with an open mind.

A year removed from a seventh-place finish at the True Team Meet in Sauk Rapids, Massmann knew a top finish would be unlikely with perennial Section 5AA powers Moorhead and Brainerd in the fold.

“Our goal was to improve on last year’s finish,” Massmann said. “The girls are doing a nice job. But both Moorhead and Brainerd showed at the meet why they are so strong.”

Junior Erin Autio and sophomore’s Rachel King and Maddie Jesser had first-place finishes. Autio finished tops in the triple jump. Jesser was first in the 200-meter dash and King finished first in both the 1600 and 3200-meter run. The Knights finished the meet in third place with a team score of 721.

“Jesser won the conference 200 a year ago and sort of flew under the radar,” Massmann said. Autio has been doing well this year in the jumps. The distance runners in Sjelin, King and eighth grader Lizzy Heil are the strength of our team.”
