Ceremony for baseball field

The opening ceremony for Bankwest/Lamperts Field in Jim Thome Park starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11 in Rockford.

This new youth baseball facility is in what was called Parkwood Park, 1000 Linea Parkway, was built by the Rockford Area Athletic Association.

Along with local fundraising donations and a grant from the Twins Community Fund, Bankwest and Lamperts were the other two big contributors.

The Twins approached RAAA to name the field after former Twin player Jim Thome because of his contributions when with the team. Naming of the field had already been granted to Bankwest/Lamperts as corporate sponsors so RAAA offered to re-name the park in Jim Thome’s honor.

The ceremony starts at 9 a.m. when there was still hope that Jim Thome would be able to come. The Twins will send a representative along with TC Bear.
