After spending seven weeks trapped practicing indoors, Delano softball coach Teresa Spurzem thought it just as important to get every varsity player on field as it was to win the Rochester Lourdes tournament Saturday.
“Great way for our team to start out the season,” said Spurzem about winning three games, realizing it should have started long ago. “We had a chance to get all the girls in games. I was really impressed with how well they all played.”
The box score in the championship game against Stewartville listed 19 Tigers contributing to the 11-4 victory. Delano also defeated Rochester-John Marshall 5-4 and Alexandria 10-0.
Delano slammed out 14 hits against JM when both Makenna Giese and Sam Noetzelman both had three hits. Katie Emmer and Katy Kalleberg both had two hits with one hit each provided by Maggie and Ellie Rizor, Savanah Bettin and Mackenzie Maxwell.
Pitcher Katie Vatnsdal worked five innings, allowing eight hits. Giese pitched the last two innings without allowing a hit. She also pitched the win over Alexandria, yielding four hits in five innings.
The offense was led by Emmer and Kalleberg, both collecting two hits, drove in two runs and had a double. Noetzelman and Ellie Rizor both drove home two runs on one hit.
Vatnsdal and Giese both pitched in the title game win. Vatnsdal gave up one hit in three innings and Giese four hits in four innings. Kalleberg hit a grand slam home run “to give a big boost.” Collecting two hits each was Vatnsdal, Emmer, Maggie Rizor and Giese.
“With all the games we will be playing a short amount of time it is key we have two strong pitchers, and we do,” notes Spurzem. “Ellie and Maggie (Rizor) are new to the team this year and are both strong offensive and defensive players that will help out our team.”
