Program begins 5th year May 1
The fifth annual Step to It Challenge program is already taking registrations from residents in Maple Grove and Osseo. These two cities are among 23 participating cities in Hennepin County.
This year’s Step to It Challenge runs May 1 through May 28. The challenge is a friendly, physical activity competition which began in 2009 with five Hennepin County community partners. Along with creating camaraderie and spirit, it’s a great opportunity for people of all ages to get moving after a long winter.
A Walk in the Park event has been set up for Wednesday, May 1, at noon at the Minnesota Twins Target Field in Minneapolis for challenge participants. Step to It staff will meet participants at Gate 29 to start the event.
The city of Osseo has set up two courses — a one-mile and a two-mile — that are marked with signs.
Maple Grove has over 36 miles of trails within the city.
Those interested don’t just have to walk. There is a conversion chart available on the Step to It website for activities such as walking, biking, skateboarding, Tai Chi, and even mowing the lawn. A list of over 50 different activities is available on the website.
Step to It participants record the number of steps they walk each week on the website www.steptoit.org.
All 23 communities compete against one another to win the Most Active Community awards. The winning communities receive a trophy for one of the following: the community with the residents who have the highest total number of steps accumulated throughout the challenge or the community with the residents who have the highest average number of steps per participant.
Each of the 23 communities will award the top stepper (the individual with the highest total number of steps) in their community a pair of Minnesota Twins tickets. This individual will also be recognized on field at the Minnesota Twins game.
Those people interested in participating in this year’s Step to It Challenge can sign up now through May 1 at steptoit.org. There is no cost to participate.
