Rogers debaters push for auditorium

Last year Rogers High School started the tradition of having a culminating debate at the end of the debate unit for the Advanced Placement English classes.

Eight of the best debaters are chosen to debate in front of the entire junior class. They get their resolution when they get to school the day of the debate and then they have that day to prepare and then they debate sixth hour.

The students decide whether to take the negative or affirmative position, who will actually debate and who will just research. Last year the resolution was: Be it resolved that RHS implement a “bring your own technology device” policy. And this year, it was: Be it resolved that RHS build a performing arts auditorium.

Judges included Dist. 728 Supt. Mark Bezek, Assistant Supt. Jana Hennen-Burr, school board chairperson Jane Bunting and former school board chairperson Jack Hines.

“The kids really look forward to it and strive for the honor of being chosen,” said instructor Gail Weber. “It is a great way for the students to realize it is OK to be smart!”

Weber added that the “affirmative” won its case.
