Rockford youth basketball team wins state

Rockford’s seventh grade boys basketball team captured the A division title at the MYAS Grade State Tournament played in Buffalo.

Seeded third out of 16 teams, Rockford defeated Wayzata 39-31, Saint Louis Park Provost 48-23, Eden Prairie 43-25 and Kasson-Mantorville 42-32.

Players include Kyle Johnson, Jack Cady, Zach Beise, Wyatt Shober, Graham Paatela, Kyle Calder, Connor Cruz, Blake Young, Drew Rozanski and JJ Strumbel. The team is coached by Erik Peterson, Jeremy Paatela and Rod Strumbel.

The team is a member of the Rockford Area Athletic Association’s (RAAA) travel basketball program including grades four through eight. The goal is to develop and improve basic basketball fundamentals and skills.

This season, seven boys teams and six girls from RAAA competed in the MYAS state tournament.
