Osseo Junior High School placed fourth at the MATHCOUNTS Regional Competition back on Feb. 9 in Fridley.
The regional competition consisted of two individual rounds and a team round. All three parts are used to determine a team score. The top two teams and top four individuals advance to state.
The Osseo’s team’s came in fourth place out of 10 schools. Collin Sham and Tora Husar tied for 15th place in the individual competition. Other individual results were JP Lyon placed 20th and Jake Walters, Daren Malaythong and Josh Tomczik tied for 25th place out of 70 students.
Regional team members included Tora Husar, JP Lyon, Collin Sham and Jake Walters. Other students participating at the regional meet as individuals were Michael Ly, Daren Malaythong, Keely Miller, David Nguyen, Josh Tomczik and Ulahn Xiong. There have been a total of 18 students at Osseo practicing since the beginning of October to be one of the 10 students to compete at the regional meet. The team is coached by Danette Campbell and Bernie Stueve.
MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders aimed at improving students’ mathematical skills, improving the quality of math education and increasing student interest in math. Osseo Junior High School began competing in 1991.
The next challenge for the math team is the St. Cloud State University Math Contest Thursday, April 4.
