The State champion STMA Knights wrestling team added more honors to their banner season in the individual, portion of the State Wrestling Tournament Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2, at the X-cel Energy Center in St. Paul. Led by state champions, junior Tommy Thorn (120 pounds) and sophomore Jordan Joseph (170), the Knights had a school-record 9 state placewinners. For Thorn, it was his third consecutive state individual title which gives the Thorn family of STMA 10 individual state wrestling titles and ties the record for state titles by brothers in Minnesota. The record of 10 titles is also held by the Sanders brothers of Wabasha-Kellogg, Zach and Eric, each of whom had 5 individual state wrestling titles.

Tommy Thorn was dominant and impressive en route to his title at 120 pounds winning 4 matches including a pin, a tech fall, and 2 major decision wins, finishing his season with a record of 50 wins against a single loss. Jordan Joseph had to defeat defending state champion TJ O’Hara of Tartan at 170 pounds, in the finals, to earn his first state title after finishing 4th last season in class “A.” Joseph secured a crucial 2nd period takedown to win by the score of 4-3, and finished his season with a record of 43-8.

Junior Mark Voss (132) was runnerup to Apple Valley’s Seth Gross after defeating Gross in the dual against Apple Valley two days earlier. Seniors Cole Sladek and Lincoln Mallinger each finished second at 138 pounds and 145 pounds, respectively. Freshman Mitch McKee placed third at 106 pounds, while seniors Ricky Briggs (182) and Mikey Kessler (285) each placed 4th. Another senior, Tanner Mills, was 5th place at 126 pounds.

STMA head coach, Dan Lefebvre, was selected as Minnesota class “AAA” wrestling coach of the year, the second time that Lefebvre has earned that distinction.
