The St. Michael-Albertville boys’ swim/dive team is sending all three relays and five individuals to the 2013 state tournament.
A score of 434 at the Section 8AA Meet on Feb. 23 at St. Cloud Tech was good for second place – 56 points behind section champion Maple Grove.
Senior’s Noah Dalluge, Eli Guillou and Brandon Richardson and junior Mitch Cusick and sophomore Grant Moser all had state qualifying times.
Both Guillou and Cusick are first time state qualifiers and Dalluge, who was named Section 8AA Swimmer of the Year, along with Richardson and Moser are repeat performers.
“I’m proud for Mitch and of course, I’m proud for Eli because he’s my son,” said head coach Tom Guillou, who was named Section 8AA Coach of the Year. Garrett Abraham was also named Section 8AA Assistant Coach of the Year. “It’s an honor to win the award. It’s recognition for the kids and the improvements they made. They are the ones that step up and the coaches are rewarded for their hard work.”
Both Moser and Richardson qualified in the same event – the 100 butterfly. Moser finished first with a time of 53.76 and Richardson finished fourth with a time of 54.17. Richardson also qualified in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:00.99. Dalluge’s time of 22.01 in the 50 freestyle and 48.56 in the 100 freestyle were both state qualifiers.
“It was great to see Noah do so well,” Guillou said. “Like Kasey Roberts with the girls, he didn’t put all out at sections. His focus is really on how well he will do at state.”
The final individual qualifiers came from Eli Guillou in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.01) and Cusick in the 50 freestyle (22.42). Cusick is also part of the 200 freestyle relay team – seeded eighth at state – that finished second with a time of 1:29.11. Junior Alec Bolme, Richardson and Moser also make up the relay squad.
The 200-medley relay team of senior’s Max Rooney, Sam Konsor, Guillou and Dalluge finished first at 1:38.43 and will be seeded ninth at state. The 400-freestyle relay team of Richardson, Konsor, Moser and Dalluge finished first with time of 3:13.77 and will be seeded sixth at state.
The state tournament will take place Feb. 28-March 2 at the U of M Aquatic Center.
“Our goal at state is to finish in the top 10,” Guillou said. “We’ve worked very hard to get to this point and we are aiming for a top-10 finish.”
