Osseo exploded for 48 points in the second half to rally past host Centennial 74-62 in Northwest Suburban Conference girls’ basketball action Friday, Feb. 22. The win lifted Osseo to a share of the conference championship with Centennial with a record of 16-4. It is Osseo’s third straight conference title.
Osseo trailed 26-31 at halftime but completely dominated the second half to sweep the season series from the Cougars, who were ranked No. 9 in the state. Janay Morton led Osseo with 24 points, Phillis Webb added 19 and Ayo Porte 16. The Orioles were able to get to the free throw line frequently and outscored Centennial 23 to 12 from the charity stripe.
The Orioles received the third seed in the Section 5 tournament. Roseville, ranked fourth in the state and 24-2, is the top seed, followed by 2. Centennial, 3. Osseo, 4. Maple Grove, 5. Champlin Park, 6. Mounds View, 7. Coon Rapids, 8. Irondale.
The Orioles, 18-8 overall, open at home Thursday, Feb. 28 against Mounds View. The winner advances to face Centennial or Coon Rapids in the semifinal at 6 p.m. March 5 at Anoka. The section final is March 8 at Anoka at 8 p.m.
“The section is wide open,” Osseo coach John Rieser said. “Roseville is the favorite as the 1 seed, but after that — it is anyone’s guess. Centennial, Maple Grove, and Champlin Park are all playing excellent basketball leading into the end of the season. The NWSC has been like a heavyweight boxing match this year, with teams trading punches all season long. Mounds View and Irondale are also playing good basketball, and Coon Rapids is always dangerous.”
