Even a last place finish at the Section 8AA tournament couldn’t prevent the St. Michael-Albertville gymnastics squad from feeling good about their finish.
The score of 128.35 posted Feb. 16 at sections was the lowest posted by eight participating teams, but it far and away was the best team score the Knights posted this season.
The previous high of 120.95 came Jan. 17 in a dual meet loss at Monticello.
“Our girls were excited and you could see their mouths drop with huge smiles,” said STMA head coach Nicole Ramler. “We were hoping for a score of 124 and to have five girls pull together and record a 128 was the biggest highlight.”
STMA’s strongest event came in the vault. The Knights scored 34.500, which was higher than Rogers’ 34.375 and Buffalo’s 34.25. Senior Jenna Lee recorded a 9.0 and finished 11th overall. Lee also finished tied for 8th overall on the floor routine with a score of 8.975.
The Knights and Rogers were the only two teams to have five girls score in the all-around. Lee’s score of 33.20 topped all STMA gymnasts. Sophomore’s Jada Brown 31.425, Melissa Berning 31.40, Julia Leigh 30.25 and eighth-grader Anna Keefer 29.60 were the other finishes.
St. Cloud Tech – rated No. 3 in Class AA – finished in first place with a team score of 148.675. Elk River, Moorhead and Brainerd, all ranked in the top 20, finished 2-4, respectively.
Tech senior Mariah Miller posted the highest all-around score of 38.025. Miller finished 7th overall in the 2012 state individual all-around. Finishing a close second to Miller was Elk River senior Kaylee Jondahl, who finished with a 38.0.
The Knights finished with a team GPA of 3.657 which earned them the Silver Academic Award.
“I thought our season went great,” Ramler said.
